The beauty and barber industries are not just thriving — they’re outpacing job growth seen in many other sectors.
That’s according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, which forecasts job growth in beauty and grooming services through 2033 to be 7% for hairstylists and barbers, and 8% for “personal appearance workers” such as nail artists and lash or brow techs.
Both are well above the national average of 4% growth across all industries, translating to more than 45K new jobs in the next decade, and more than 90K job openings per year.
So, what’s behind the momentum? In its recent Occupational Outlook Handbook for Barbers, Hairstylists, and Cosmetologists, the federal agency credits the strong forecast to an “increased demand for personal appearance services” among consumers.

Salon and wellness software Vagaro says there's more to it than that. The brand's 2025 Vagaro Vantage Report shows the surge is being fueled by other elements, including viral trends in beauty and grooming, new technology, and an increased demand for inclusive and personalized services.
According to the report, these top factors are driving growth in the beauty and barber industry:
1. People Still Prioritize Looking Good.
Even through economic ups and downs, the “lipstick effect” is remaining strong — consumers continue investing in self-care and wellness. As the U.S. population grows, so does demand for grooming and beauty services.
2. Lash & Brow Services are in Serious Demand.
According to Vagaro, 71% of marketplace searches focus on lash and brow services. These treatments require regular upkeep, creating steady income for professionals.

3. Viral Beauty Trends are Powerful.
Social platforms like TikTok and Instagram are introducing consumers to fresh ideas in beauty and grooming. From “expensive brunette” hair colors, to nail art and scalp facials, clients are hitting salons and barbershops to stay on trend.
4. Men’s Grooming is Evolving Fast.
Barbering is no longer limited to haircuts. The field has expanded to include skincare, scalp treatments, and color services, with no signs of slowing down.
This evolution not only enhances client experience but also creates more lucrative opportunities for barbers.

5. Inclusivity Matters More Than Ever.
More and more salons and barbershops are becoming affirming spaces for neurodivergent individuals and the LGBTQ+ community. This shift not only promotes equity, but expands market reach.
6. Technology is Supporting Business Operations.
Two-thirds of beauty professionals reported using AI to streamline their operations, while 75% said they prioritize automation, such as online booking and customer management tools, to help them run their businesses.
“The beauty and barber industries have shown impressive resilience and adaptability,” Vagaro concluded. “Now is the time to embrace change, refine skills, and grow in this thriving industry.”
